Master Gardener Deluxe Kit: Select the right vegetable

SweetPeppersSince we choose to go with the Master Gardener Kit from AeroGrow, we next had to decide what vegetable we were going to grow. But as one question was answered the next question

the appeared "What vegetable would we grow, the with Master Gardener Kit?" Upon researching to see what wouldn't grow with the AeroGarden , which includes any type of subterranean plants, such as carrots, beets, potatoes or peanuts. In addition also plants that require very dry conditions and have very low water requirements such as cactus, and succulents, will not do well in the AeroGarden.

With that bit of information in our hands we started our search, to find what vegetable would work well. Before we start going into determining what vegetables work in the AeroGarden , there are a few items to take into consideration.

What type of AeroGarden do you have? Because if you have an AeroGarden Classic the lamp arm is limited to a height of 12", were the Deluxe Aerogarden (or the lamp arm upgrade has a height of 24"). This will allow you to grow your plants taller, but even if you have the classic you can still grow most any seeds. Though it is recommended to find miniature (dwarf) plants, as they should be able to work in the AeroGarden classic and have no problem in the Deluxe Aerogarden.

What type of vegetable are you looking to grow? Even though you can grow different kinds of vegetables in the AeroGarden , one thing to take into consideration is the height, water and light requirements, nutrients, and life span. Try to get plant(s) that have the same type of requirements, instead of several different requirements. Since one plant may requirement more/less light than others, could lead to problems with one or more of the plants. You can find this information on the seed packets, or on a website from a particular seed distributor.

We know what does work well in the AeroGarden , leafy green type (lettuces), tomatoes, herbs, snow peas, green beans. But, we wanted to almost consider this a type of experiment, to possibly expand the boundaries of the AeroGarden . We visited a number of websites, and took a look at many different types of vegetables. The first determination we made, is that the plant needs to be a miniature (dwarf) type. This would help in the amount of pruning that would have to take place. When we were researching for what type of vegetable we wanted to grow, we had looked at several from tomatoes, to cucumbers, and peppers. Next, we really do love sweet peppers and initially we were unable to find a good mini-pepper plant. But then we visited the Park Seed Co., and came across the Pepper Cherry Pick Hybrid. Looking at the requirements for this plant, seemed to fit right in what are needed for them to be successful.

Ultimately we decided to go with the Pepper Cherry Pick Hybrid from the Park Seed Co.. The peppers themselves only grow to be around to 1 1/4" in sez, the plant itself can reach height of 22" so for our AeroGarden Classic we are going to need to keep them will pruned and out of the grow lights. It took only about 3 business days to receive the seed packets from Park Seed Co. via US Mail.

In the next part of this series about the Master Gardener Deluxe kit, we will be covering planting our second AeroGarden with Pepper Cherry Peppers.
