Cherry peppers have arrived!
Over the last few weeks we have been trying to determine why we haven't been seeing any pepper develop on our plants.   We had started to come to the conclusion that maybe these Pepper Cherry Hybrid plants just might not grow in the Aerogarden. With the main factor being that we weren't letting the plant fully develop, due to using the shorter arm on the Aerogarden.  But, before we gave up completely we wanted to make sure that the plant were pollinating properly.  So, we did some research into pepper plants and the pollination process.

So it was kind of like going back in time (a few years) to science class, remembering that was one of the subjects that we did cover was this exact subject.

Plants develop seeds through a process called pollination. Pollination is the transfer of pollen from the stamen (male flower) to the pistil (female flower part). Since both a stamen and pistil are necessary for seed formation, they are called essential organs. Most flowers contain two other parts, the sepals and petals, which may help attract insect pollinators. A complete flower contains all four parts. If only one of the essential organs is present in a flower, it is called an incomplete flower.

After doing the research, I had discovered that some fellow gardeners had been using cotton swabs (Q-tips) to pollinate their indoor pepper plants.  Since we lose the ability of the bees and other insects to assist in pollination process.  Two weeks I had noticed that we had some new buds starting to show up on all three of the plants, a couple of flowers on each plant was in the process of opening.  So, I took and swab very gently the inside of the flower and took that and covered each of the other buds and flowers that were on the other plants.

Over the last week, we are now seeing some of the flowers fall over and tiny peppers starting to emerge out.  So, upon seeing that we were absolutely delighted to see that happening.   Throughout all of this time, we have been keeping the water level at least 3/4 of the way full and been putting in 2 of the large nutrient tablets in every two weeks.

Now, that we have peppers coming we will start bringing you updates every few days on the process of these peppers.
