| End of the growing season |
|
It's hard to believe that fall has now arrived, and in a few more weeks we'll go from working outside and enjoying the benefits of summertime.
To staying inside and keeping warm, while starting to think of the upcoming holiday season (as of this writing it's only 84 days away).
But, before we can warp up this growing season we must do a final harvest from the Earthbox and also take a look at the proper steps to take to ensure that your earthbox will be ready come next spring. Since we have started harvesting tomatoes from our plant, we have been averaging around 5-8 tomatoes on a daily basis. Which is pretty good for a daily harvest, remember were talking about roma tomatoes here. Then about 3 weeks ago we had harvested the last of the tomatoes that had been growing on the plant. Basically, the plant had given us all the tomatoes that it could for the first cycle, which in the end did wind up being quite a good harvest. The plant had started producing alot of new blooms, and over the last 7-10 days we have once again been harvesting about 3-6 tomatoes daily. We have started to have some cooler overnight temperatures, which the plant hasn't seemed to like very much. You can tell that the plant is struggling, and it won't be much longer before plant will succumb to the colder temperatures moving in. Thus, the outdoor growing season will be over for us here in Central Indiana. Normal first frost for us is arond October 1st on average, temperatures later this week are suppose to approach where we might get some frost. From the latest pictures that we posted above, there are a few more tomatoes that are just about ripe enough to pick. So, we are going to let the tomatoes that are currently ripening fully ripen and then we will harvest them. By Saturday we are expecting to then clean out and prepare the Earthbox for storage it until next spring. Since we didn't start talking about our earthbox until halfway through this year's growing season. We are planning for next year to be able to bring you a complete report on how our earthboxes do next year. As our plan is to purchase 2 additional Earthboxes to grow a variety of fruits (blueberry bush), and some other vegetables. We are looking to connect with some other Earthbox gardeners, so if you are one we would like to hear from you.
