Harvesting loads of fresh tomatoes |
|
Since we have been blogging about our Earthbox last month, we have been harvesting a several dozen delicious tomatoes from our Earthbox. On the other hand our red pepper plant did produce around a half dozen peppers. But, for some reason the plant hasn’t produce any new peppers since then. What could be the reason?
Well, there are several possible reasons:
1. That we had planted the pepper plant too close to the tomato plant. When planting an earthbox, is that the plants need their space to grow in. Especially since the tomato plant grows at a much faster rate than the pepper plant. It could be possible, that the roots from the tomato plant have cut-off the roots of the pepper plant from getting the nutrients and water that it needs. We won’t be able to see if this is the case until after the growing season is over.
2. Disease could have stopped the plant from producing fruit. Even though the plant looked very healthy, it could be possible that a disease could be responsible. This is very unlikely, since there were no visible signs that the plant was been attack by a disease. We did all possible steps to prevent this, by spraying some Garden Safe® Fruit & Vegetable Insecticidal Soap. This did help in eliminating bugs from attacking the fruit.
We may never completely know as to why our red pepper plant stopped producing, but that’s the beauty with gardening as it can sometimes be an adventure.
As for our red roma tomato plant, it has been doing very well and is looking quite healthy. Though the weather here in Indiana has been very dry over the last 30 days (only 2 days of rain in August), so we’ve had to make sure to add water to the Earthbox on a daily basis. We are getting new buds growing at the top of the plant, so we should have another harvest here in the next 5-7 days.
Here are some pictures over the last few weeks of our Earthbox.
